The six important spinels in the spinel minerals (see Table 9-3) are cubic systems (equal crystals) at room temperature. According to the composition of the spinel, the unit cell length is between Between 0.8066 nm and 0.8374 nm. Generally, the crystal is octahedral, and a twin crystal is often formed on the (111) plane. The Mohs hardness is between 5.5 and 8.0.

Analysis of Magnesia Spinel Bricks by Using Refractory Materials for Large Coreless Induction Furnace
The medium-sized coreless induction furnace with continuous casting machine, especially the smelting operation of large coreless induction furnace steelmaking, results in a large amount of scrap steel and contains a large amount of metal oxide, resulting in white corundum-MgO (10%) lining. Manganese oxide and iron oxide are infiltrated into the matrix, causing severe structural spalling and a low service life. The reason is that the high content of oxidized and iron oxide slag reacts with excess Al2O3 in the lining of the refractory to form a spinel rich in Mn and Fe, accompanied by a very large volume expansion leading to exfoliation.
In this case, a refractory made of fully pre-synthesized Spinel can be used. The results show that this Spinel refractory (containing 30% MgO) is very successful for vacuum furnace melting operations. Studies on post-residual linings have found that this refractory material substantially prevents the penetration of manganese oxide and iron oxide, and the hot surface reaction zone is substantially eliminated.
The above situation indicates that the penetrating ability of the spinel-based refractory anti-manganese iron oxide made of magnesium-rich Spinel (containing 30% MgO) is improved, for large-scale coreless induction furnace melting, especially in "ingredient melting" The applicability of chemical and physical aspects has also been strengthened.
From the above results, it can be deduced that the large coreless induction furnace lining refractory can also be designed according to the MgO-Spinel. (pre-synthesis-in situ Spinel) scheme, that is, magnesia is used as coarse particles, and pre-synthesized Spinel is used as medium particles and The fine particles are simultaneously mixed with Al2O3 and MgO fine powder, and the mixture forms Spinel (in situ Spinel) in situ when heated at a high temperature. By carefully balancing the pre-synthesized Spinel/in situ Spinel ratio in the matrix, a high performance MgO-Spinel refractory can be obtained.
The thermal shock resistance of the MgO-Spinel sample made of Mg0-SPinel-Al2O3 mixture, that is, the sample was immersed in molten iron at 1550 °C for 20 s, taken out and cooled, and the number of flaking times after the test was broken until the sample was broken and Spinel The relationship between the contents. The figure shows that the thermal shock resistance (exfoliation) of the MgO-Spinel refractory specimen increases linearly with the increase of the Spinel content, and the thermal shock resistance of the stoichiometric Spinel material is better.
It is considered that the MgO-Spinel refractory material is particularly composed of magnesia as a coarse particle and Spinel as a medium particle and a fine powder, and at the same time, Al2O3 and MgO fine powder are mixed, and the pre-synthesized Spinel (in situ Spinel) in the matrix is carefully balanced. The proportionally made MgO-Spinel refractory material can be adapted to the operating conditions of a large coreless induction furnace.
